CPJ is looking for a Program Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Position Overview:

This position, reporting to the Program Director, will be responsible for leading the organisation’s research and advocacy in the region. Applicants should have reporting experience, extensive knowledge of media and human rights issues in the region, and a clear commitment to press freedom. The ideal candidate is as comfortable chatting with an imprisoned journalist as they are addressing a head of state. This is a collaborative, strategic, and public-facing role, with regular travel in the region expected.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Set research and advocacy priorities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Lead a team of researchers and correspondents reporting on press freedom and attacks on journalists in the region.
  • Oversee the production of daily and long-form reports on press freedom.
  • Serve as a senior CPJ spokesperson with the media, governments, partner organizations, and civil society, including regular travel.
  • Anticipate and respond to news and events affecting press freedom and journalists.
  • Manage a team of researchers and correspondents based across the region.
  • In collaboration with the Advocacy team, devise and support advocacy efforts, including the work on emblematic cases and issues in the region.
  • In collaboration with the Emergencies team, monitor potentially dangerous situations and assist distressed journalists within the framework of CPJ’s journalist assistance and safety work.

Education/Qualifications and Work Experience:

  • At least five years of reporting experience in the region.
  • A deep understanding of how media in the region works and its specific press freedom challenges.
  • Proven skills in writing concise and high-quality reports including the capacity to digest, interpret, and accurately summarize reports and data.
  • Proven ability to interact with senior leadership in government and in other national, regional, and international organizations.
  • Fluent Spanish is required.

The CPJ offices in Midtown Manhattan are currently working on a hybrid schedule of two days in-office (Wednesday and one other day of the employee’s choosing), with the option of working three days remotely.

Candidates residing outside of the local area may be considered for fully remote work.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by the Writers Guild of America, East.
