The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) seeks an Audience Engagement Associate who will be responsible for producing CPJ’s social media content and implementing digital outreach as part of a dynamic digital team sitting at the nexus of communications and advocacy.

This role requires a creative and savvy social media maven who follows the latest digital trends, moves fluently across platforms, and is skilled at quickly crafting pithy and accurate content.

With a knack for storytelling and advocacy messaging, the Audience Engagement Associate will produce clever and eye-catching graphics on deadline and is skilled at leveraging analytics to optimize digital strategy and hit key metrics.

Responsibilities
  • Generate, curate, and publish daily content on CPJ’s global social media platforms that align with the organisation’s strategic and digital goals and build our brand.
  • Package CPJ content for social–including data, daily news, special reports, video, and audio–by the digital strategy and advocacy campaign objectives.
  • Oversee CPJ’s regional social media accounts and email blasts, ensuring staff is properly trained in using such platforms and adhering to good practice.
  • Distribute CPJ’s weekly newsletter, The Torch, in collaboration with CPJ’s senior communications associate and other team members; contribute to the newsletter(s)/email blasts, as needed.
  • Contribute to establishing and implementing email best practices; alongside the digital communications manager, ensure the proper functioning of CPJ’s email distribution systems and lists.
  • Work closely with the video producer to leverage video on social media, generating original ideas for social-first video content and coordinating live coverage.
  • Produce basic graphics using Adobe Suite, Canva, or comparable software as needed, following CPJ’s visual brand.
  • Review graphics created by other departments to ensure they align with CPJ’s visual brand.
  • Leverage content and social media presence in support of fundraising campaigns.
  • Monitor mentions and conversations, identify opportunities to boost CPJ’s profile and influence, and respond to queries via social and email channels.
  • Track CPJ’s website analytics, social media performance, and email newsletters according to chosen metrics; assist with assessment and optimisation to contribute to data-informed decision-making.
  • Perform research on benchmark trends and audience demographics and preferences.
  • Continuously innovate to ensure CPJ uses the best digital tools available and evolves and adapts as required to meet the organisation’s goals.
  • Support the digital communications manager in implementing CPJ’s digital strategy, ensuring a robust digital component in departmental initiatives and projects. This includes website support, day-to-day maintenance, and helping create pages aligning with CPJ’s messaging priorities and visual brand.
  • Research and propose social media partnerships that increase CPJ’s reach and engagement with key audiences.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Required qualifications
  • Experience with social media management tools and content management systems,  social listening, and scheduling tools.
  • Deep knowledge of social media platforms, etiquette, and online trends; demonstrated understanding of advocacy, campaigning, audience building, and engagement.
  • Experience with Google Analytics and social media analytics.
  • Superb attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Sound news judgment and an ability to react quickly and accurately to breaking news stories; able to manage global, macro, and political nuances alongside micro details on each social post.
  • Impeccable English writing skills.
  • A critical thinker with a collaborative spirit and an ability to balance the needs of different departments and programs.
  • Ability to independently prioritise projects and tasks based on urgency.
Preferred qualifications
  • At least two years of experience managing in-house social media accounts (ideally, for a non-profit or a newsroom) and/or working in digital news content, communications, or marketing roles.
  • Understanding of mission-driven organisations.
  • Experience crafting advocacy messaging and leveraging news to advance organisational messaging.
  • Ability to assess the credibility of sources and news reports.
  • Knowledge of or demonstrable interest in international affairs.
  • Familiarity with AP style.
  • Familiarity with WordPress or experience working with another website platform.
  • A basic understanding of digital security methods and trends.
  • Proficiency in another language in addition to English, like Spanish or French.
