Applied Media Researcher and Content Monitor

Free Press Unlimited is currently looking for Applied Media Researcher and Content Monitor. This position requires applicants with strong research backgrounds, the ability to develop methodology and carry out full research cycles independently and the ability to deliver on an academic level. In addition, a thorough practical understanding of media monitoring is required. This position covers the full cycle, from research objective, proposal, developing methodology, coding, media framing, discourse analysis, drafting a final validated report and sharing findings with partners, stakeholders and audiences for verification. The media content monitoring reports will be measuring the media outlets’ content on, for example, sources, the impact of portrayal (or omissions) of different groups and overall adherence to professionalism and ethics of journalism. The researcher will be working within a running programme for Syria, titled Cohesion through Independent and Inclusive Media (CIIM), which is part of a long term strategy that started almost 10 years ago.   • Able to implement and manage a whole research project cycle, develop a methodology, implement and draft research reports, executive summaries, data oversight for reporting to donors, lessons learned and case studies
  • Help select research focus (event monitoring or sampling) and design/revise the methodology (use of indicators, a sample of outlets, coding schedule, coding book, coding guidelines production schedule) in collaboration with coders/ FPU HQ staff
  • Apply qualitative & quantitative data analysis and coding techniques
  • Develop and improve the methodology for all research products
  • Adopt a consultative approach and advise and engage users of research for validation, learning and feedback systems
  • Ensure quality control and peer review mechanism in their work, monitor the output and conducts quality checks
  • Advise media outlets, journalists and coaches on how to use research reports as learning tools to assess and improve the quality and ethics of publications and share updated information as a resource at the working session, events, planning sessions
  • Deliver final reports with visuals and a catching presentation, and coordinate the translation and final formatting of these deliverables
  • You will have the opportunity to contribute to policy reports and translate scientific evidence into practical recommendations


  • Able to research and produce reports in English and Arabic
  • Knowledge of media sector in MENA and preferably the Syrian context
  • University-level research & media studies
  • Experience with qualitative research methods and analysis techniques; preferably has experience with event-based research
  • Ensures research data management following the FAIR data principles
  • Demonstrated experience in research, media content monitoring, developing methodologies and analysis techniques as demonstrated by publications
  • Carries out and publish research within the framework of the project
  • Able to form and manage a research team that works results-oriented
  • Present research to a variety of academic and non-academic audiences in an engaging way
  • Accurate mindset, self-critical and service driven
  • High level of integrity and security sensitivity
  • Proactive mentality
  • Able to receive and give constructive feedback
  • Affinity with journalism, media and human rights is a must
