Entries are now open for the 2025 African Fact-Checking Awards — the longest-running awards programme celebrating fact-checking journalism on the African continent. The awards are open to working journalists, professional fact-checkers, and journalism students across Africa.

In 2024, the competition attracted 241 entries from 29 African countries, and even greater participation is expected in 2025. The awards recognise excellence in debunking false or misleading claims that impact African societies, with substantial cash prizes for winners and runners-up.

Objectives
  • Celebrate excellence in fact-checking journalism across Africa.
  • Encourage the use of evidence-based reporting to combat misinformation and disinformation.
  • Highlight impactful work that informs public debate and safeguards democratic dialogue.
  • Support a culture of accuracy, verification, and integrity in media across the continent.

    Eligibility

  • Journalists, journalism students, and professional fact-checkers based in Africa.
  • Individuals who published or broadcast fact-checking work between 1 May 2024 and 7 June 2025.
  • Fact-checks that evaluate the accuracy of a public claim on a significant topic related to Africa, concluding it is either misleading or incorrect.
  • Entries that demonstrate strong evidence-gathering, fair analysis, and clear public presentation.
