Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) is seeking a Senior Communications and Media Officer to strengthen its advocacy and communications work. This new role will provide additional capacity for the department while playing a leading role in implementing FPP’s restructured communications strategy. The position will support both organizational needs and programmatic communications across FPP’s work with Indigenous peoples and forest communities in 18 countries.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the rollout of FPP’s overall communications strategy and oversee day-to-day delivery.
- Strengthen FPP’s media relations to position the organization as a trusted voice on Indigenous, human rights, and conservation issues.
- Oversee daily departmental operations for the first year, ensuring effective workflows and outputs.
- Mentor and support junior team members, providing guidance and delivering training for FPP staff and partners.
- Lead development of programmatic and advocacy-focused communications strategies in collaboration with FPP teams.
- Produce impactful communications materials tailored to diverse audiences and media platforms.
- Coordinate information sharing among partners and networks, ensuring FPP’s outputs amplify Indigenous voices.
- Represent FPP at events and meetings, including international engagements, in support of partners.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in communications within an international, advocacy-driven or NGO context, ideally with Indigenous peoples or local communities.
- Demonstrated experience in media relations at national and international levels; existing media networks are an advantage.
- Proven ability to communicate complex advocacy issues in accessible, compelling ways across multiple media formats.
- Strong strategic thinking and project management skills in communications and advocacy.
- Experience working in multilingual and cross-cultural environments.
- Excellent written and spoken English; additional languages (especially French or Bahasa Indonesia, or Spanish) highly desirable.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and maintain positive collaboration.
- Experience mentoring colleagues or line management is an asset.
Familiarity with digital communications tools and trends is desirable.
