The Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation) is seeking a Science Communications Officer to join its Science Communication Department in Nairobi, Kenya. The position reports to the Science Communication Manager and will play a key role in amplifying Africa-led scientific innovations through impactful communication strategies.

 

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement communication plans and annual work plans aligned with the initiative’s goals.
  • Package and disseminate evidence and outcomes from grantee cohorts and projects across digital and offline platforms.
  • Craft compelling content, including case studies, blogs, thought leadership pieces, and impact stories, to highlight Africa-led science.
  • Coordinate and support a network of communication professionals across cohorts to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Manage communication aspects of events, workshops, and conferences, and maintain an annual events calendar.
  • Support advocacy strategies to raise the profile of Grand Challenges (GC) Africa and engage funders, policymakers, and the scientific community.
  • Contribute to funder engagement by preparing communication materials and editorial content for reports.
  • Champion science communication as a core component of research projects and contribute to knowledge sharing across the field.
  • Manage communication budgets and resources efficiently.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field; a degree in science communication is highly desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science field (biomedical, biosciences, or health research).
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience in communications, preferably within science, research, academia, or non-profit sectors.
  • Strong experience translating complex scientific concepts into accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills; ability to produce content for web, social media, and print. Written proficiency in French or other African Union languages is an asset.
  • Proficiency in digital communication tools, including social media management, CMS, and multimedia production.
