The Courage in Journalism Awards honor brave women and nonbinary journalists who face significant risks to report the truth. These awards highlight individuals who cover taboo topics, work in environments hostile to women, and persist despite online violence, threats, and government oppression.
The Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award is also presented annually, bringing attention to women journalists who are detained or imprisoned. Since its inception, the Courage in Journalism Awards have recognized over 100 groundbreaking journalists in 56 countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to women and nonbinary journalists (full-time staff or freelance).
- Candidates can be reporters, writers, editors, photographers, or producers.
- Journalists of any nationality working in any country are eligible.
- Nominations are accepted in English, Spanish, or French.
Award Categories
- Courage in Journalism Awards: Honors journalists who persist despite risks and adversity.
- Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award: Recognizes journalists who have been detained, jailed, or imprisoned.
Selection Process
Recipients are selected based on their dedication to press freedom, resilience against threats, and impact on their communities.
