Code for Africa (CfA) is offering six African Academy for Open Source Investigation (AAOSI) Fellowships to journalists in Southern Africa. The six-month fellowship aims to equip investigative journalists and watchdog CSOs with cutting-edge OSINT and SOCMINT forensic analysis skills to produce evidence-based investigations. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend, hands-on training, mentorship, and publishing support to counter information manipulation and interference (IMI), disinformation, and hate speech—focusing on climate and LGBTQ+ issues.

Objectives
  • Equip journalists with OSINT, SOCMINT, and digital forensic tools to enhance investigations into information manipulation.
  • Help media platforms expand their reach and deepen audience engagement through data-driven storytelling.
  • Build a pan-African network of investigators to collaborate on cross-border investigations and unmask influence operations.
Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be based in a SADC member country (e.g., Angola, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, etc.).
  • Have at least one year of experience in journalism—preferably investigative or data journalism.
  • Provide evidence of recently published articles, reports, videos, or podcasts.
  • Be affiliated with a media outlet or relevant organisation (freelancers welcome if affiliated).
  • Commit to publishing fellowship-related work and engaging in weekly online sessions.
  • Be fluent in English or French.
  • Candidates with cross-border reporting experience in the region will be prioritised.
