Tips and tools for reporting and MEL

In early September, GFMD launched the Arabic translation of the Fundraising Guide together with GFMD member ARIJ.

Sadly, with the harrowing conflict that has unfolded over the past 3 weeks in Palestine and Israel, the translated emergency funding and crisis resources are now more relevant than ever.

The Arabic Fundraising Guide provides access to:

💰20+ emergency funds for media in crisis

🆘40+ crisis resources for media and journalists, including

These resources are also available in English.

Please share the Guide with your colleagues in the region and do let us know if you have any comments, feedback, or suggestions about the Guide.

FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:

Mapping donors

Mapping donors is a crucial task for agencies seeking funding, whether big or small. Most of the research can be conducted online, with some donors being more transparent about their program priorities and funding procedures than others.

To strategize effectively, donor mapping should focus on:

  • programmatic and geographical priorities
  • understanding the themes that interest the donor
  • looking at their past funding
Providing an assessment of the chances of success and noting other organisations that have received funding can be valuable in the donor mapping exercise.

Agencies can gather much of this information online, but it's essential to engage with other organisations in the same field to get a more comprehensive understanding.

You can read more about the crucial aspect of mapping donors in Module 3 of the Fundraising Guide, on Donor Engagement.

At last month's GIJC23, Bridget Gallagher (Gallagher Group LLC), Karen Martin (GIJN) and Michael Randall shared similar points on how to prospect potential donors. You can view GIJN’s recording of the session here:

💸 French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs / Canal France International

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has delegated management of French government media development funds to Canal France International, a subsidiary of the France Médias Monde group.

Canal France International (CFI), a French media development agency, works as a public sector operator to support media outlets in developing regions, including sub-Saharan Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Levant. CFI initiates projects that revolve around local media, amplifying and fortifying local information and discussions, especially in regions vulnerable to conflict, political instability, and health crises.

Themes:
CFI teams work annually on some 30 projects, falling within three wider programmes:
  • Media and governance: tackling democratic governance issues, notably by strengthening the rule of law, media plurality, the ethical conduct of public debates and the search for pluralistic and high-quality information.
  • Media and Development: helping media organisations to take ownership of development issues (education, health, gender) by strengthening the relationship of trust between journalists and civil society.
  • Media and Enterprise: addressing the economic issues that have an impact on the activities of media organisations as businesses. The programme contributes to the consolidation of business models and training, particularly for young talents, with the aim of enabling financial autonomy and thereby encouraging editorial independence.

WHAT WE'RE FOLLOWING ABOUT MEDIA FUNDING THIS MONTH

WEBINAR

🖥️ How Nonprofits Use Tech to Meet Their Missions

Date and time: Nov 8, 8:00 PM CET

Join the Chronicle of Philanthropy and a panel of nonprofit leaders in this webinar as they describe innovative solutions and share actionable advice on how to make the most of modern technology to streamline, expand, or improve nonprofit outcomes.

Background: Many nonprofits are continuing to see increased demand for services as pandemic-era aid ends, and inflation’s grip takes its toll on vulnerable people. Rising operational costs further strain organisations’ ability to meet pressing needs. However, there are some bright spots. Nonprofits are developing tech solutions that enable them to meet their missions more efficiently and effectively.

REPORT

💰 Paying for news: Price-conscious consumers look for value amid cost-of-living crisis

A new report from the Reuters Institute utilises survey data from 20 countries and qualitative research from the UK, US, and Germany to investigate the payment dynamics for online news content. It examines who pays for news online, which publications they subscribe to, the subscription costs, and the motivations behind their choices.

A significant focus of this study is the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on online news subscription patterns. By analysing the experiences of subscribers who cancelled their subscriptions in the past year and those who retained them, the report sheds light on how economic factors affect news payment behaviours. It also explores strategies for attracting new subscribers during the economic downturn.
