Welcome to the 12th edition of Bottom Line!

To mark the one-year anniversary of the MediaDev Fundraising Guide we will be inviting small and medium-sized GFMD members interested in improving their fundraising capabilities to a town hall meeting at the end of June.

Join us for:

  • An introduction to and run-through of the guide,
  • Your fundraising questions answered,
  • A possibility to connect with potential collaboration partners, and
  • A chance to share how you experience the fundraising process, what your needs are and to let us know how we can improve the guide,

We will be offering the webinar in English, Spanish, and French, with our Spanish and French webinars focusing on the fundraising environments in Latin America and francophone Africa. Please note that this webinar is available for GFMD general and affiliate members only.

If you aren’t already subscribed to the GFMD mailing list, sign up now to access the final dates, agenda, and registration when the Members' Digest is published next week.

We look forward to seeing you online at the end of June!

In order to have quality journalism you need to have a good income stream, and no Internet model has produced a way of generating income that would pay for good-quality investigative journalism.

FROM THE GUIDE:

Module 9 of the Fundraising Guide, looks at templates commonly used by the EU, FCDO, and US Department of State, providing insights into how they should be completed. (Please note that this particular chapter is for GFMD members only.)

You will find a guide to completing:

🇪🇺 A grant application for funding from the European Commission under the EIDHR programme
🇬🇧 An application form for funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)
🇺🇸 A proposal in response to a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) published by the US State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor

It also includes a full section on how to complete a logframe, including useful tips on how to compile one:

✅  Write the first draft of your logical framework before tackling the body of the proposal.

✅  Logframe planning should be inclusive, involving all partners and individuals who have the combined knowledge to come up with an effective approach and develop shared objectives.

✅  Think of your logframe as a dynamic document which will evolve during the project lifecycle.

If you work for a GFMD member or affiliate, just click on the respective links to request access to the guides and templates.

If your organisation is not a member yet, read more about joining GFMD and learn about our other benefits - or email our Membership and Engagement Manager Fiona Nzingo.

WHAT TO READ THIS MONTH
Journalism is not a given in people's lives. Here's how to rethink the future of news

BBC's Ros Atkins has summarised a recent speech on the future of news that he delivered to the Society of Editors in this article for the Reuters Institute. In it he presents seven tips for journalists and four for news organisations on how to do innovation right, drawing on his own successes and failures in trying to modernise the news.

How might we make news membership work in the Global South?
- Taking chances on media membership in Zimbabwe

Divine Dube, a Zimbabwean journalist, media entrepreneur and publisher, describes the challenges of trying to grow a membership model in a region of the world that is not yet ready to embrace a paid membership plan. In spite of recent improvement in the local news ecosystem his digital newsroom, The Citizen Bulletin, founded in 2017, still struggles today to break free of its reliance on philanthropic funding. Read here to find out more about his journey into membership models in news.
