Help us identify topics for a GFMD town hall on AI in fundraising

There isn't currently a lot of research or knowledge about the impact of AI in fundraising for the media and media development sector. Yet some urgent questions arise when contemplating the future:

❓Will fundraising apps scrape your data and share it with other users? Can the creators guarantee the protection of your intellectual property rights?

❓Does using AI in funding applications increase your chances for obtaining grants?

❓How should you use AI prompts when writing applications?

❓Are donors going to embrace AI-generated applications or are they going to filter out non-human content?

This is still a new area and we need all the information we can get. GFMD is planning a town hall on this topic and we need your input to develop the agenda. Please send us your suggestions, questions, and concerns, and tell us about your own experiences so we can address this issue comprehensively.

FROM THE FUNDRAISING GUIDE:

It's been a while since we had a look at the Fundraising Lexicon. This is the section of the Guide that most of the GFMD team turns to when formulating new proposals.

Each donor has different requirements and specific terminology so the lexicon is a great resource when checking if there are any donor-specific nuances that you need to be aware of:

Backstopping (Application forms)

A term used most commonly by the European Commission, backstopping refers to in-house project management resources which are deployed in support of any given project.

See more here.

Cost-share (Budgets)

Cost-share is a principle favoured by US donors and has similarities with the EU concept of co-funding. However, cost-share is more aspirational than co-funding.

See more here.

As well as viewing the whole lexicon in alphabetical order, you can also browse this resource by category. Let us know if you have suggestions for new entries or concepts you would like to see in the Guide.

FUNDER PROFILES

Doen Stiftung

The DOEN Foundation was established more than 30 years ago by the Nationale Postcode Loterij (Dutch Postcode Lottery) to support small, innovative initiatives. Through the Nationale Postcode Loterij and the VriendenLoterij, DOEN receives an annual contribution from each lottery. It uses the money to help fund more than 250 pioneers with grants, loans and investment capital.

DOEN provides start-up support to green, socially inclusive, and creative pioneers seeking innovative solutions for a better world. Once established, DOEN transfers the initiatives to other parties where possible to increase their impact. By supporting these pioneers, DOEN accelerates the transition to a sustainable, social and creative world.

🖥️ Are Donors Taking the Journalism Crisis Seriously? An Analysis of Official Aid to Media 2010–2019

By Mary Myers and Heather Gilberds for the Centre for International Media Assistance (CIMA)

CIMA recently published a new report analysing trends in official aid flows to the media from 2010-2019.

In this period, independent media faced escalating threats globally, with authoritarian regimes tightening control over information spaces and traditional media struggling with digital transformations. Despite the recognised importance of international aid, support to media development stagnated at approximately 0.3% of total official development assistance, averaging between $300 to $400 million annually.

While major democracies have reaffirmed their commitment to media support, this hasn't translated into significant aid increases, particularly in light of new global crises like COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine. While there is cautious optimism with renewed attention to media development, substantial increases in aid haven't materialised, underscoring ongoing challenges in securing the future of independent journalism.

Unlocking the Power of Purpose: Why the Gates Foundation Supports Mission-Driven Organisations

JFF Interview with Miguel Castro, head of Global Media Partnerships at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

In a recent interview, the Journalism Funders Forum (JFF) spoke with Castro about how the Gates Foundation works with media partners. Despite challenges such as changes in media culture and ensuring that journalism stays independent, the foundation focuses on teaming up with outlets that care about making a difference, regardless of whether they are for-profit or non-profit. They've had some big wins, like working together on projects such as 'The New Arrivals', which highlights good journalism and cooperation between different groups. By carefully planning grants and sticking with partners for the long haul, the foundation hopes to support journalism that makes a real difference in society.
