Press Play Programme 2027

Press Play is a three-month programme for makers with a good idea for an in-depth journalistic project, such as a story, podcast, video or photography project. With the help of a coach and workshops, participants develop the idea into a strong journalistic project plan and learn how to pitch it to the right media.

Key Details

• The programme runs from early March to the end of May 2027. It includes workshops, group meetings, break-out sessions and 1-on-1 coaching.
• There are four tracks: Audio, Video, Writing and Photography. Each track has room for five participants.
• Between 11 March and 11 May 2027 participants work independently two days a week on their plan and pitch, with at least two check-in moments with their coach.
• The total expected time investment is about 20 days. Selected participants receive a compensation of €3,200 for this time.
• At the closing event, participants present their journalistic plan to (chief) editors of various media, producers and other potential partners.
• The programme focuses on developing the project plan and pitch. Participants do not yet, or only to a very limited extent, work on carrying out and publishing the project.

Requirements

• A good idea for an in-depth journalistic project, such as an article, longread, podcast, radio documentary, audio or video report, short documentary, online video or photography project
• Journalistic ambitions but not yet familiar with the Dutch media landscape, or already a journalist who has not yet carried out an own in-depth project but has that ambition
• (Some) experience in journalism, in research or as a creative maker
• Previous (co-)work on a longer-running project (own project, or as part of a study or job, within or outside journalism)
• Familiarity with research methods (such as interviewing or desk research)
• Sufficient technical experience in writing, audio, video or photography, depending on the chosen track
• An inquisitive attitude and perseverance
• Availability to complete the full Press Play programme, with physical attendance at the meetings held in the Netherlands
• Not eligible if you have previously received a grant from Fonds BJP under the Project Grants scheme (Regeling Projectsubsidies)
• All parts of the programme and the pitch (written and oral) are in Dutch. Ideas for a Caribbean-Dutch journalistic medium that will appear in English or Papiamento after completion are also eligible.

How to participate

Create an account in the subsidy portal, complete the Press Play application form online. Applications that meet the formal conditions and criteria go to an independent, multidisciplinary advisory committee. Applicants hear via the portal whether they have been selected about seven weeks after the application period closes. Apply here.
