The Nieman Fellowship gives working journalists a year at Harvard to pursue a self-designed programme of study. The International Nieman Fellowship is for non-U.S. citizens, including those working in the U.S.

Eligibility

  • All Nieman Fellowship applicants must be working journalists with at least five years of full-time media experience.
  • The International Nieman Fellowship is for non-U.S. citizens, including those working in the U.S.
  • If you’re a national of a country where the U.S. has suspended issuance of nonimmigrant visas (specifically J visas), the Foundation recommends that you wait to apply until these restrictions are lifted.
  • If an individual holds citizenship and a passport from an additional country that doesn’t have that visa restriction, the candidate may submit an application for a 2027-28 International Nieman Fellowship.
  • Because a Nieman Fellowship is not a writing residency, book proposals are ineligible.

How to Apply

Complete the online application by 01 December 2026. It consists of two essays (a personal statement of up to 1,000 words and a study proposal of up to 500 words), a professional profile and study proposal summary, work samples, and three letters of recommendation. Recommenders must submit their letters through the online portal by 15 December 2026. Applications must be authored solely by the applicant, and any AI use for editing must be disclosed. Apply here.
