German–Northern European Journalists Fellowship 2027

• Eligibility: Journalists between 18 and 45 years of age working as freelancers, trainees, or editors at German media outlets (German applicants), or journalists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania (Nordic and Baltic applicants)
• Target region: Germany or Baltic countries
• Application language: English (Language skills in German are not a prerequisite)

The Deutsch-Nordeuropäisches Journalistenstipendium, established in 2000, promotes professional exchange and dialogue among journalists from Germany, the five Nordic states, and the three Baltic states. Up to 22 journalists are selected annually: approximately half from Germany travel to a Nordic or Baltic media outlet for an eight-week placement, while the other half from the Nordic and Baltic countries travel to a German outlet. The programme includes a multi-day introductory conference in a Nordic capital or Berlin, the eight-week placement, and a closing event in Berlin at which fellows present their journalistic work and a written experience report.

Eligibility

• Journalists between 18 and 45 years of age working as freelancers, trainees, or editors at German media outlets (German applicants), or journalists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania (Nordic and Baltic applicants).
• Knowledge of a Nordic language (or, for Nordic/Baltic applicants, German) is not required; working English is expected of all participants.
• Applicants must be available for all programme stages: the introductory conference, the full eight-week placement, and the closing event in Berlin.
• The €3,800 payment provides partial support only; applicants must be prepared to make a personal financial contribution toward travel and accommodation.

Requirements

• A curriculum vitae with a photograph.
• A reference letter from editorial management confirming the applicant’s journalistic role, professional competence, and suitability for an international placement.
• Up to four written work samples, or alternatively a list of relevant broadcast/multimedia contributions.
• Stated preference for placement country and type of media outlet.

• letter of recommendation by an editor, supporting the application
• four written samples of work (TV and radio journalists are asked to send a comprehensive list of contributions.)
• a short motivation letter, incl. preferences of host media outlets and of host regions (i.e. Munich) in Germany
