Health Care Journalism Grants 2026–2027

The NIHCM Foundation supports independent, timely, and impactful health care journalism with the potential to inform efforts to improve the affordability, accessibility, and quality of health care in the United States.  For this cycle, the Foundation is particularly interested in reporting on health care costs and quality, health care consolidation, artificial intelligence in health care, prescription drugs and technology, rural health, and maternal health.

Eligibility

• Journalists from national and local print, digital, trade, and broadcast news organizations — including nonprofit and for-profit news organizations — as well as freelancers, are welcome to apply.
• Nonprofit organizations and universities are also welcome to apply.
• Proposals must focus on the United States to be considered; all funded projects should be geared towards improving health care in the US.
• Letters of interest or commitment from editors or media outlets are encouraged for freelancers.

Requirements

• A completed online application submitted through NIHCM’s Good Grants entry system by October 2, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET; applications may be saved as drafts and completed in stages.
• Basic information about the submitter (organisation or individual) and the key personnel’s experience.
• Responses to general questions about the proposed project covering significance, impact, dissemination plans, timeline, and budget.
• Proposed projects should be published within a year of the grant being awarded; NIHCM will notify grant winners in December 2026.
