EJN is funding newsrooms and media organisations in coastal countries to produce in-depth marine-conservation reporting and to build journalists’ capacity around the global 30×30 ocean-protection target. EJN anticipates supporting five organisations with grants of $10,000 USD each — one for each focus country (Ghana, Mexico and the Philippines) and two to applicants from any eligible country. The application deadline is August 10, 2026, 11:59 PM (Asia/Manila), with successful applicants notified in September 2026 and projects completed by 15 September 2027.

Eligibility

  • Open to newsrooms and media organisations in coastal countries with a marine border (countries with only a freshwater coast are not eligible).
  • Applicants from Ghana, Mexico and the Philippines are especially encouraged, with one grant reserved for each of those focus countries and two open to any eligible coastal country.
  • EJN’s definition of media here includes newspapers, online media, radio, television, multimedia platforms, journalist networks, collectives, and journalism-support organisations.
  • Civil society organisations, academic institutions, NGOs or environmental groups are not eligible, and applications focused primarily on advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered.
  • Former EJN grantees may apply, but organisations with an existing (active) EJN grant are not eligible.

Requirements

  • A project proposal; content-production-only proposals must yield robust, in-depth outputs, and proposals of fewer than 10 stories will not be competitive unless they add capacity-building.
  • A detailed budget using EJN’s budget template, with justification for the requested amount.
  • Transparency about any use of generative-AI tools in preparing the proposal.
  • A risk-management plan is encouraged (physical/digital security and mental health), with any related costs included in the budget.

How to Apply

Register or log in on the EJN site, complete the online application and upload the budget (and supporting documents) before 10/08/2026. Applications are accepted in English and Spanish (a Spanish call PDF is provided) Apply here.
