The USC Annenberg Centre for Health Journalism runs a five-month Data Fellowship that trains U.S. journalists to acquire, clean and analyse data, then mentors them as they produce a major investigative or explanatory health reporting project (National and California tracks).

Eligibility

  • The Data Fellowship is designed for U.S. journalists seeking to hone their data-analysis skills, who will produce a major investigative or explanatory health reporting project or a series of data-driven health stories.
  • The National Track seeks project ideas on the economic circumstances, structural barriers and policies that affect children, families and communities (for example child development, safety-net programmes, housing insecurity, and child welfare).
  • The California Track seeks project ideas on inequities in access to health care, community health and the functioning of health-care systems in California (for example Medi-Cal access, maternal and infant health disparities, immigrant health, and environmental-justice issues).
  • Participating journalists receive one-on-one mentoring and a multi-day in-person training in beginner, intermediate or advanced spreadsheets or RStudio.
