The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is seeking candidates for a full-time in-person Press Freedom Monitoring Internship in Brussels. It offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of policy areas, including media freedom and journalists’ working conditions. The Press Freedom Monitoring Intern will be involved in the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR). The MFRR is an EU-funded project launched in 2020 which supports journalists under threat in the EU and candidate countries.

This Media Freedom Monitoring internship also offers the opportunity to collaborate directly with media freedom and journalists’ safety experts and senior management, and be involved in the organisation of EFJ events, which can help enrich his/her professional network. He/She will join our diverse staff in Brussels for a 6-month period. The intern will integrate our team under a “convention d’immersion professionnelle”. The position will run from 4 August 2026 to 4 February 2027.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Monitor media freedom violations, verify information and write alerts for Mapping Media
    Freedom and Council of Europe monitoring platforms
  • Contribute the draft of annual monitoring reports
  • Promote legal and practical support to journalists in need
  • Assist visibility to the most serious cases through social media (Bluesky, Facebook,
    Linkedin, Instagram) and press releases and statements for the EFJ website.
  • Possibility to assist video editing, preparation of ‘PressTalks’ EFJ Podcast.

Eligibility

EFJ is seeking applicants with:

  • At least a completed bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, may be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program but should be full-time available during the duration of the internship.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Good understanding of the journalism sector and media freedom issues in Europe
  • High command of English, native level (any other language is an asset)Strong team spirit
  • Proactivity, autonomy, creativity hands-on
  • Sense of information
  • Familiar with Slack, Canva, WordPress
  • Desirable: experience in journalism
  • Video editing is a plus
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in Belgium. EFJ is not able to provide visaapplications and work permits. Only those having the eligibility to work in Belgium will be considered for this position.

What the internship offers

  • The intern will receive a “convention d’immersion professionnelle” with a monthly gross
    allowance of 1.300 euros.
  • Public transport costs will be reimbursed on a percentage basis and prorated according to office workdays, in line with Belgian social law.
  • Lunch vouchers of 10 euros per working day are included and can be used in grocery stores and most restaurants.
  • Relocation expenses are not covered.
