Editor (Full Time)

The Balkan Investigative Regional Reporting Network (BIRN Hub) is looking for an experienced editor to join their award-winning team at Balkan Insight, BIRN’s flagship English-language publication, and help shape the future of independent journalism in the Balkans. The selected candidate will play a central role in managing editorial production and maintaining the highest possible journalistic standards.

Responsibilities

• Managing editorial production workflow, overseeing duty editors and English-language editors.
• Overseeing journalists’ day-to-day work, providing editorial guidance, feedback and support.
• Commissioning, editing, writing and publishing news articles, analysis pieces and investigations and interviews.
• Subediting material to ensure accuracy and consistency with editorial standards.
• Ensuring high editorial quality by reviewing and approving text and visual materials prior to publication, including picture selection and verification.
• Planning editorial coverage, including commissioning, setting deadlines and ensuring timely delivery.
• Working closely with the social media team to produce content for digital platforms and enhance audience engagement.
• Working closely with BIRN’s programmes and project teams to ensure editorial output are aligned with project goals and reporting requirements.
• Ensuring that editorial output complies fully with editorial policies, BIRN’s strategy and project details in coordination with the Managing Editor and Regional Director.
• Developing new ideas and topics.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintaining appropriate contacts with BIRN country offices and/or personnel, to ensure the proper execution of the above-mentioned duties.
• Working closely with other departments such to ensure alignment and integration of strategies with overall organisational goals.
• Carrying out any other duties that may reasonably or exceptionally be required to ensure the smooth operation of Balkan’s
• Insight work, such as substituting for absent colleagues, etc.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Key Requirements

• Minimum 5+ years of experience in editorial roles.
• Native English language knowledge.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Knowledge of the Balkan region.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with digital content production and ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Speed and efficiency in managing copy flow and subediting text.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to rigorously enforce style expectations
• A solid understanding of media law and legal risks facing journalists.
• Creative thinker with the ability to generate innovative ideas and solutions.
• Experience and ability to work with and manage cross-border teams in multicultural environments.
• Experience in investigative journalism, wider knowledge of Southeast Europe and experience of using analytical tools will be considered strong assets.
