Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is inviting applications for the role of a consultant for media and journalists in exile. The role is a remote one seeking specific deliverables and requires 15 working days.
In this regard, MiCT is working with international NGOs and is seeking to develop checklists for exile preparation of at-risk journalists and media globally. The aim is to allow journalists and media outlets to prepare for and quickly react to threats to move to exile.
Key responsibilities
The consultant will:
- Analyze and curate existing resources: Review and combine relevant existing resources for exile preparation and management focussing on areas of documentation, travel, finances, legal, digital and physical security.
- Conduct expert interviews: Interview at least 6 exiled journalists and media outlet representatives to identify key needs and experiences when preparing/moving to exile.
- Develop actionable checklists for journalists and media outlets: Combine existing resources and interview findings into structured, actionable checklists for 1) journalists and 2) media organisation to prepare for exile.
- Test & feedback: Test the checklists through focus groups and individual feedback of potential users and adapt accordingly.
- Conduct training: Conduct two introductory trainings for interested journalists and media outlets to introduce the checklists.
The deliverables for the position include:
- An interim report summarising learnings (approx 5 pages)
- Set of actionable checklists for: 1) journalists and 2) media organisations along the above-mentioned dimensions and threat levels (reviewed and tested by practitioners)
- Two 2h trainings to introduce the toolkit to broader interest groups
The assignment comprises 15 working days, is to be conducted remotely, and should be completed by the end of March 2026.
Requirements
Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:
- Proven knowledge of exile media contexts, through research or practical experience
- Strong qualitative research skills
- Experience working with journalists in challenging environments
- Fluent English is required and additional languages (Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian, Burmese etc) will be a plus.
- Knowledge of safety practices for media professionals and an understanding of journalism in exile are a plus.
- Flexible availability in above-mentioned dates
