The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with UN Women, UNESCO, and under the ACT to End Violence Against Women and Girls Programme funded by the European Union, invites women journalists, human rights defenders, and activists worldwide to participate in a global survey exploring the rising threat of online violence.
This survey aims to map the scale, forms, and impacts of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) and its growing role as a barrier to women’s participation in public life, civic engagement, and freedom of expression.
About the Survey
Developed by ICFJ’s Research Division and City St George’s University of London, the survey is led by Dr. Julie Posetti, a global expert in digital safety, gendered online violence, and media freedom.
The questionnaire builds on the landmark 2020 ICFJ–UNESCO study “The Chilling: A Global Study of Online Violence Against Women Journalists”, expanding its scope to include human rights defenders and activists.
Online violence is defined as harassment, abuse, targeted surveillance, gendered disinformation, hate speech, or threats conducted through internet-based communication technologies such as social media, email, chat apps, generative AI tools, or other digital platforms.
