Global Survey on Online Violence Against Women Journalists

Status: Open

Organisation: International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ)

Deadline: 17/10/2025

Location: Online

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Research Division, in collaboration with UN Women and UNESCO, invites journalists, human rights defenders, and activists to participate in a global survey on online violence against women. The initiative is part of the ACT to End Violence Against Women and Girls Programme funded by the European Union.

Modelled on the landmark 2020 UNESCO-published study The Chilling, this new 2025 survey aims to better understand and address the rising threat of online violence targeting women journalists and media practitioners. It seeks to capture participants’ lived experiences to inform evidence-based international policy and strengthen collective efforts to combat technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Objectives
  • Map the scale, forms, and impact of online violence against women journalists and activists.
  • Compare findings with the 2020 results to assess how the digital threat landscape has evolved in a post-pandemic, AI-driven era.
  • Support the development of updated global responses from media organizations, policymakers, and civil society.
Participation Guidelines
  • Sharing of personal information or follow-up contact details is strictly optional.
  • Support resources are available for participants upon request.
  • Networks or organizations helping disseminate the survey are asked to share it only through trusted channels (e.g., mailing lists or closed networks) and avoid posting it publicly on social media to protect participant safety and data integrity.
