UNESCO is seeking a Media and Communications Specialist (Consultant) to support the organization’s strategic communication efforts at its Regional Office in Bangkok, Thailand. This high-impact advisory role involves leading and implementing innovative media strategies to increase UNESCO’s visibility across the Asia-Pacific region. The assignment will span 7 to 11 months, with work based at UNESCO Bangkok.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic advice on the design, development, and monitoring of communication strategies aligned with UNESCO’s goals and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
- Develop speeches, talking points, op-eds, and media materials for the Regional Director and Bangkok office, ensuring consistency with UNESCO’s messaging.
- Oversee digital content creation and ensure high-quality updates to UNESCO’s website and social media channels.
- Lead external communication efforts, build media relations, and represent UNESCO Communications in regional UN coordination platforms.
- Strengthen the communication capacity of UNESCO staff and country offices through training and mentorship.
- Design and implement digital and multimedia strategies, including the development of new promotional products and branded content.
- Organize and support advocacy events such as Global MIL Week, International Day for Universal Access to Information, and World Press Freedom Day.
- Monitor political and reputational risks across the Mekong region and advise on communication positioning accordingly.
- Produce monthly reports detailing deliverables and completed communications tasks.
Qualifications
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations, with significant experience in strategic advisory roles.
- Proven ability to develop high-level media content and manage complex communications projects.
- Demonstrated experience working with the UN system or international organizations, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and cross-functional coordination skills.
- Excellent written and spoken English. Knowledge of another UNESCO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
- Familiarity with UNESCO’s work on freedom of expression, MIL, digital transformation, and communication policy is highly desirable.
