GFMD welcomes 12 new members

In July 2025, the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) welcomed twelve new members to our community of journalism support and media development organisations.

We are delighted to introduce the newest organisations that have become part of our growing network, united by a shared dedication to advancing media development worldwide. Each brings unique insights and expertise, enriching the collaborative spirit at the heart of GFMD.

Spanning multiple regions, our new members reflect the truly global nature of the GFMD community. Please join us in warmly welcoming the following organisations to the network:

General members
  1. Center for Sustainable MediaHungary: The Center for Sustainable Media supports the financial sustainability of independent newsrooms in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. It advises on audience revenue, partnerships, and business development, while also working with media funders and policymakers to improve investment strategies and funding mechanisms. Its Media Finance Monitor newsletter shares funding opportunities and insights into media financing trends.
  2. Fundo de Apoio ao JornalismoBrazil: Fundo de Apoio ao Jornalismo is a Brazilian initiative supporting local, public interest journalism to promote citizenship, debate, and inclusion. It offers multi-year grants, training, and research support to underfunded organisations, prioritising diversity and equitable access across Brazil. Its first funding round will launch in 2025, targeting up to 15 organisations.
  3. Momentum – Journalism and Tech Task ForceBrazil: is a Brazil-based think tank advancing the sustainability of journalism in the Global South. It conducts applied research, develops policy solutions, and convenes diverse stakeholders to address digital-era challenges to journalism. Activities include publishing reports, hosting public events, and promoting fair and democratic tech governance.
  4. Asosiasi Media SIber Indonesia (AMSI)Indonesia: AMSI works to strengthen ethical standards and trustworthy online journalism in Indonesia. It advocates for freedom of expression, supportive media regulation, and digital industry fairness, while fostering collaboration among media stakeholders. AMSI aims to uphold professional journalism and support the sustainability of its members.
  5. Institute for Reporters’  Freedom and Safety (IRFS)Switzerland: IRFS defends freedom of expression in Azerbaijan and promotes access to independent media as a foundation for democracy. It focuses on challenging media restrictions and using technology to amplify human rights. IRFS regularly publishes updates on its advocacy work via its website.
  6. Palestinian Network for Media Developmen OrganizationPalestine: Palestinian Network for Media Developmen Organization is the first licensed NGO in Palestine focused on developing the local media sector. It aims to strengthen Palestinian media institutions and professionalise journalism within a challenging political and economic environment.
  7. Making Peace Visible, Inc.USA: MPV connects journalists and peacebuilders to increase visibility and understanding of peacebuilding stories. It runs a podcast, publishes a journal, and hosts cross-sector events. With further funding, MPV plans to expand its work through educational programming.

  1. Fundación La Voz Pública para la Verificación del Discurso Público/ ChequeadoArgentina: Chequeado is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation working to elevate the quality of public debate and strengthen democracy in Argentina and beyond. Since 2010, they have been advancing access to information, critical thinking, and fact-based public discourse through fact-checking, technology-driven tools, and civic engagement. Chequeado is widely recognised for its innovative use of data, storytelling, and open information to counter disinformation and promote transparency.
  2. NAQD MediaLebanon: Based in Lebanon, NAQD Media is a youth-led, independent media platform focused on inclusive journalism that amplifies marginalised voices and sparks critical dialogue. Through bold storytelling and multimedia formats, NAQD explores social, political, and economic realities shaping young people’s lives. Highlights include a documentary on child exploitation, in-depth municipal election coverage, cross-border collaborations, and a weekly Instagram series spotlighting Lebanese youth. The team values independence, courage, creativity, and accountability.
  3. Cuestión PúblicaColombia:  Founded in 2018, Cuestión Pública fills a critical gap in Colombia’s media landscape by producing independent investigative journalism. The outlet is dedicated to exposing abuses of power and holding institutions accountable through deep, evidence-based reporting on behalf of citizens.
  4. Addis Standard – Ethiopia: Addis Standard, is an Ethiopian media organisation committed to democratic values, human rights, and inclusive governance. With a focus on political accountability, gender equality, environmental justice, and federalism, JAKENN promotes critical debate and public participation through journalism that uplifts underrepresented voices and supports transparency.
  5. Bagabaga Studios / DivergentePortugal: Bagabaga Studios is a non-profit media cooperative in Lisbon known for combining journalism, documentary film, and design to explore complex social issues. Its digital magazine, Divergente, launched in 2014, specialises in longform narrative journalism. Recent standout projects include an investigation into African veterans of Portugal’s Colonial War and a data-driven piece on voter disengagement in the EU. Divergente champions in-depth, public-interest journalism delivered at a reflective pace.

GFMD is thrilled to add a new group of members to the network and to work with them to promote media development and support journalism wherever it is threatened across the globe.
