The Specialist Editor, Europe and Central Asia, plays a crucial role in CPJ’s regional editorial strategy by commissioning, writing, editing, and publishing content such as news alerts, reports, statements, and social media posts. The editor will work closely with the Regional Director and the Research & Analysis team to ensure that editorial content reflects regional priorities and advances CPJ’s press freedom mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commission, write, edit, and publish daily content including news alerts, statements, reports, and other materials aligned with the Europe and Central Asia region.
  • Publish content on CPJ’s website, including selecting images and writing captions.
  • Manage and publish real-time regional social media content adhering to CPJ’s communication strategy.
  • Disseminate regional content via email and other channels per editorial and communications strategies.
  • Edit research on journalists killed, imprisoned, or attacked, ensuring accuracy and editorial standards.
  • Use CPJ’s internal knowledge management system (Carta) for research and editing.
  • Identify thematic issues and integrate them into the research and analysis strategy.
  • Maintain and update CPJ’s internal databases with relevant regional information.
  • Collaborate with Regional Director, researchers, and program staff for accurate, compelling editorial content.
  • Edit for content, grammar, structure, and style per CPJ’s standards.
  • Manage multiple editorial projects under tight deadlines.
  • Mentor and provide editorial training to regional staff and writers of varying experience and language skills.
  • Perform other duties as requested by department or organization.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years experience as an editor for news agencies, websites, newspapers, or broadcast outlets.
  • Ability to identify sensitive or potentially libelous content and address concerns proactively.
  • Experience with web publishing and content management systems such as WordPress.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Commitment to CPJ’s mission to defend press freedom.
