Join one of the world’s biggest radio news programmes—Newsday—as a Senior Journalist based in Nairobi. This role supports BBC’s mission to bring global news closer to African audiences. You’ll shape daily editorial content, ensure quality storytelling, and bridge teams across Nairobi and London.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:
- Exceptional English writing skills – clear, creative, concise, and engaging for both radio and digital formats.
- A proven track record of impactful journalism that drives engagement.
- Strong editorial judgement – ability to identify the right guests and stories for global and African audiences.
- Deep knowledge of international current affairs, with special attention to issues relevant to African listeners.
- Ability to translate global stories in a relatable way for African audiences.
- Experience in original storytelling, headline-making interviews, and innovative production.
- Proficiency in creating digital assets (audio, video, stills) and distributing content via social media.
- Experience in live radio or broadcast environments is desirable.
- Demonstrated editorial leadership and collaborative team skills.
- Ability to build and maintain diverse contact lists and work across teams.
- Strong alignment with BBC’s values, including commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Willingness to relocate to Nairobi, with relocation support available if needed.
Key Responsibilities
As Senior Journalist for Newsday Nairobi, you will:
- Lead the daily editorial planning and ensure the right stories are told in impactful ways.
- Support and mentor journalists on the team to elevate on-air and digital output.
- Coordinate closely with the London-based Newsday team to maintain editorial alignment.
- Select and secure high-quality guests for interviews that drive BBC headlines.
- Supervise storytelling, ensuring it is engaging, original, and suited to diverse audiences.
- Contribute to digital and social media content creation to widen audience reach.
- Step in for the Assistant Editor when needed.
- Help grow audience engagement, especially among young and women listeners.
- Uphold BBC editorial standards and contribute to inclusive, impactful journalism.
