The Data Institute is a free, two-week intensive workshop designed to equip journalists with essential skills in data journalism, design, and programming. Co-founded by Sisi Wei and Lena Groeger to bridge equity gaps in journalism training, this initiative welcomes a diverse cohort of participants passionate about telling compelling, data-driven stories.

What You Will Learn
  • Conduct and evaluate data research
  • Clean, analyze, and bulletproof datasets
  • Identify trends and apply statistical techniques
  • Prototype project designs
  • Apply typography, layout, and color principles
  • Build visualizations for complex information
  • Understand core programming concepts
  • Build a basic website using HTML, CSS & JavaScript
  • Explore applications of AI in journalism
Eligibility Criteria
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien
  • Must be a journalist, journalism student, or professor
  • No prior coding or data experience required – just curiosity!
  • Must be a member of the Ida B. Wells Society (free to join here)
  • Must bring a personal laptop capable of installing R Studio (Chromebooks/iPads are not supported)
