The Data Institute is a free, two-week intensive workshop designed to equip journalists with essential skills in data journalism, design, and programming. Co-founded by Sisi Wei and Lena Groeger to bridge equity gaps in journalism training, this initiative welcomes a diverse cohort of participants passionate about telling compelling, data-driven stories.
What You Will Learn
- Conduct and evaluate data research
- Clean, analyze, and bulletproof datasets
- Identify trends and apply statistical techniques
- Prototype project designs
- Apply typography, layout, and color principles
- Build visualizations for complex information
- Understand core programming concepts
- Build a basic website using HTML, CSS & JavaScript
- Explore applications of AI in journalism
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien
- Must be a journalist, journalism student, or professor
- No prior coding or data experience required – just curiosity!
- Must be a member of the Ida B. Wells Society (free to join here)
- Must bring a personal laptop capable of installing R Studio (Chromebooks/iPads are not supported)
