The Journalist (Contractor) will play a vital role in the New Zealand College of Midwives’ quarterly member magazine, shaping its content, production, and media engagement. This position requires a skilled journalist to write, edit, and coordinate the creation of compelling articles related to midwifery practice, education, and advocacy. The role also involves managing the end-to-end magazine production process, ensuring a visually engaging, reader-friendly publication. Additionally, the Journalist will act as the primary media liaison, building relationships with media outlets, managing press releases, and overseeing media inquiries. This is a part-time contract role offering flexibility with 100-120 hours spread across a 3-month production schedule, allowing for adaptable work hours.
Responsibilities
- Research, write, and edit articles that are high-quality, engaging, and relevant to midwifery practice, education, and advocacy.
- Collaborate with various contributors to ensure timely and well-rounded content.
- Manage the full production cycle of the quarterly magazine, from content gathering to layout coordination.
- Oversee publication deadlines, working closely with designers and other stakeholders.
- Ensure the magazine is visually appealing and user-friendly, working alongside design teams to maintain high editorial standards.
- Produce visually engaging content that aligns with the College’s branding and mission.
- Act as the primary point of contact for media relations, maintaining relationships with relevant media outlets.
- Write and distribute press releases and handle media inquiries.
- Develop strategies for building the College’s media presence and ensuring consistent messaging across channels.
- Manage and adhere to editorial calendars and deadlines.
- Ensure smooth coordination between contributors, designers, and other team members.
Required Qualifications
- A relevant qualification in journalism, communications, or a related field.
- Proven experience in writing, editing, and producing high-quality content, with a demonstrated ability to create compelling articles.
- Experience in project management and overseeing the full lifecycle of publication production.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, including contributors and media professionals.
- Strong writing and grammar skills, with attention to detail.
- Editorial and project management expertise, including managing deadlines and multiple priorities.
- Adaptability and audience awareness, with the ability to tailor content to different groups.
- Proficiency in media relations, including handling press releases and media inquiries.
- Experience in producing print or digital publications.
- Knowledge of midwifery and maternity care issues or an interest in the field.
- Familiarity with Mailchimp and e-newsletter publishing.
