The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) seeks an accomplished leader to drive its initiatives in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as the Head of Programs. This pivotal role blends strategic vision, operational management, and advocacy to advance press freedom and safeguard journalists in one of the world’s most challenging regions for media professionals.

As part of the Committee to Protect Journalist’s senior management team, the Head of Programs, MENA, will oversee advocacy, research, and capacity-building efforts while managing a team of dedicated professionals. The position offers an exceptional opportunity to make a meaningful impact on press freedom in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute strategic plans for MENA programs aligned with CPJ’s global mission.
  • Lead advocacy campaigns addressing journalist safety, impunity, and press freedom violations.
  • Manage the MENA team, providing mentorship, setting performance goals, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Oversee research on press freedom violations, producing impactful reports and insights.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with regional partners, governments, and international organizations.
  • Serve as CPJ’s spokesperson for the MENA region, advocating for press freedom at national, regional, and global levels.
  • Ensure operational excellence, including budget management and compliance with the Committee to Protect Journalists policies.
Required qualifications
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in reporting, advocacy, or press freedom work, with extensive knowledge of the MENA region.
  • Fluency in Arabic (written and spoken).
  • Proven track record in strategic planning, team leadership, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Deep understanding of regional press freedom issues and the media landscape.
  • Strong research, writing, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to travel internationally (up to 25%).
