Hostwriter is looking for an editor to join their newsroom Unbias the News, focusing on new projects on climate and migration.

They are looking for someone who is passionate about storytelling, climate and migration, and who has a temperament appropriate to working in a multicultural and highly collaborative environment on challenging and controversial topics.

They’re looking for an editor to join their team, reporting to the Editor-in-chief, to assist with overseeing a new set of stories and cross-border investigations on climate and migration. Editing will take place in English, but people who speak English as a second or third language are invited to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Help organise open calls and commissioning processes for stories in the area of climate and migration.
  • Edit and fact-check stories according to Unbias the News editorial standards and principles together with other editors.
  • Work with Multimedia and Data editor to select multimedia materials for stories.
  • Assist with publication, republication and distribution/ promotion.
  • Occasional secondary editing on stories from projects on additional subjects.
  • Occasional travel/ attendance at conferences representing Unbias the News.
Mandatory skills
  • <3 years experience in journalism as a reporter, fact-checker, researcher, or editor
  • Ability to write and read well in English (C1)
  • Basic fact-checking
  • Familiarity with and demonstrated interest in international migration regime and climate/ environmental reporting
Desirable skills and experience
  • Editorial training (in any language)
  • Familiarity with WordPress publishing
  • Research skills including academic and OSINT
  • Experience in cross-border reporting projects
  • Teaching or mentoring; non-violent communication skills
  • Additional languages, esp. German, Arabic, French
Considered a plus
  • Experience of living in multiple different countries
  • Project management / organisational skills
  • Insight on power dynamics in international media
  • Network and connections with climate, migration or human rights organisations
  • Network in international media and or independent media
