Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking a talented and experienced Deputy Editor for their digital news platform, Context, to direct and manage their donor-funded editorial projects that align with their 3 areas of editorial focus – climate, socioeconomic inequality and the impact of technology on societies.

As Deputy Editor, Funded Projects, you will work with regional editors and our global, award-winning team of correspondents to shape the editorial direction of projects ranging from the interaction between climate change and labour rights to women’s entrepreneurship in the Global South to the impact of AI on digital rights, and produce a regular file of news features, investigations, explainers and unique long-form stories.

Responsibilities
  • Shape and manage editorial coverage of topics relevant to donor funded projects
  • Collaborate with regional editors and correspondents across time zones to help generate ideas, evaluate pitches and commission compelling features, investigations, explainers, and long-form stories
  • Subedit correspondents’ first drafts and write some stories of your own
  • Evangelise data-led storytelling both on your file and in the newsroom
  • Ensure on-time delivery and publication of stories as per donor contracts
  • Collaborate with the Audience and Social Media teams from pitch to publication to ensure stories are optimised for digital audiences
  • Assist with maintaining good relations with donors
  • Uphold the Thomson Reuters Ttust Principles in all donor-funded work
  • Champion a deadline-driven way of working
  • Maintain a calendar of important dates, events, anniversaries and other occurrences relevant to your file
  • Develop a network of relevant freelancers, op-ed contributors and sources
  • Serve as a key member of the newsroom’s editorial leadership and help shape our wider coverage across the climate, inclusive economies and tech & society files
Required qualifications
  • At least 5 years journalism experience, including a proven track record of excellent reporting, writing, analysis and sub-editing skills
  • Strong aptitude for identifying and teasing out data-led stories, and video and audio series
  • Proven track record of managing or helping manage donor-funded projects
  • Broad and current knowledge of global issues relating to our editorial focus areas – climate, inclusive economies and the impact of tech on societies
  • Demonstrated ability to report on underrepresented communities, particularly in the developing world, and capture diverse voices
  • Strong understanding of audience analytics and how to use them to make editorial decisions
  • Good grasp of social media platforms and how they work
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under well pressure
  • Experience working with international teams across time zones
