GFMD welcomes 10 new members

These new members join our ever-growing community on the same week as this year’s World Press Freedom Day 2023 anniversary edition where UNESCO organised a special anniversary event at UN headquarters in New York, marking 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision proclaiming an international day for press freedom.

These new members are based across all continents, reflecting the international nature of the GFMD network. With that, we are pleased to  welcome the following organisations to GFMD:

General members:

1. Baraza Media Lab – Kenya: A new and exciting space for networking, collaborating, and experimenting among Kenya’s media practitioners that aim to build a community of like-minded media practitioners committed to acting in the public interest.
2. International Press Institute – Austria: A global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists who share a common dedication to quality, independent journalism.
3. Journalisme & Citoyenneté – France: Aims to promote exchange and debate between media professionals and citizens in an attempt to define the conditions for producing quality information in 21st-century France.
4. Media Development Center – Tunisia: Promotes independent media in the country, fosters capacity-building of the media by encouraging good practice in journalism, stimulating professional ethics, institutionalizing the dialogue among the state administration, the media and the NGO sector, and boosts the networking and cross-border cooperation in the region.
5. Media in Cooperation and Transition – Germany: Delivers expert media services in complex and challenging contexts with passion, precision and agility. Through collaborative work with partners, MiCT fosters transparent, inclusive and fair dialogue supporting resilient societies that thrive.
6. Open Cities Lab – South Africa: Creates tools and interventions that strengthen capacity within government, empower citizens and improve trust and accountability in the civic space.
7. Public Interest News Foundation – United Kingdom: Works to promote public understanding and knowledge of the principles and practice of investigating, reporting and disseminating Public Interest News; promotes citizenship and civic responsibility and encourages informed participation and engagement by the public; promotes high standards of ethical conduct and best practice in journalism.
8. RNW Media – Netherlands: An international digital media organisation, working for social change that continuously shares knowledge, skills and data insights on how to use digital media to engage young people and unleash their potential to drive social change, accelerating the impact of changemakers.

Affiliate members

1. Agência Pública de Jornalismo Investigativo – Brazil: The first non-profit investigative news agency in Brazil. They aim to produce investigative reporting and promote independent journalism in Latin America.
2. Media4Impact by Impact Hub Phnom Penh – Cambodia: support entrepreneurs through their dynamic programmes, incubators and mentoring, and inspire and engage the local community with our weekly events, creative space, and online learning platform. We want to build a thriving ecosystem of impact-driven businesses and young leaders.

GFMD is thrilled to add a new group of members to the network and to work with them to promote media development and support journalism wherever it is threatened across the globe.
