Update on the Perugia Declaration for UkraineGFMD, together with members and partners, launched the Perugia Declaration for Ukraine at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia on 9 April. The declaration is currently available in 10 languages!

The declaration has already been signed by 11 Ukrainian media organisations and 204 international media organisations. It will be used as the basis for collective advocacy efforts at and around World Press Freedom Day.
“We continue to stand in solidarity with Ukrainian and all other journalists and media workers around the world who work in areas of conflict or where freedom of expression is limited, who deliver trusted information in the public interest. We will use the recommendations of the Perugia Declaration for Ukraine to ask all states that care about the media freedom, private and public donors and funders, and private companies to act and do everything they can to support our Ukrainian and international colleagues’ ability to continue reporting and serving the urgent needs of their audiences,” said Mira Milosevic, Executive Director of GFMD

May 2 – Consultation on “Developing Principles for Effective Media Assistance”
Organisers: Center for International Media Assistance and GFMD
Co-conveners: UNESCO and the Government of Uruguay’s National Service for Audiovisual Communication
Location: Sala Jaguel 2, Convention Center in Punta del Este (Centro de Convenciones de Punta del Este), Uruguay.
Time: 9:00 – 12:00 UYT
Description: This invitation-only meeting will help to produce guiding principles for international donors supporting media development and press freedom. With input and feedback from interested international donors, key implementing agencies, and media support organisations, CIMA and GFMD have outlined the rationale and timeline for this initiative in a concept note, which highlights the urgent need to foster more effective, locally-driven international cooperation in the media sector.
Participants: International organisations, government representatives, media development organisations, and news outlets.
Aim: Participants from various regions will drive interactive sessions and discussions over a morning of reflection and exchange of experiences. These discussions will shape the principles and help to produce recommendations for implementation.

This conversation with media development practitioners and experts will discuss root problems with the crisis confronting independent media and how international and national support to the media sector can be most effective.

May 4 – High-Level Session. Safety of journalists in Ukraine war

Description: Free and independent media are critical for ensuring civilians have access to potentially life-saving information, debunking disinformation and rumours, particularly in times of conflict. Journalists are frontline witnesses to the war in Ukraine, risking their lives to keep their fellow citizens and the international community informed.
Aim: To provide a forum for discussions on the current challenges facing journalists in Ukraine, presenting perspectives and experiences from media workers both within and outside of the country, as well as responses from the international community.
