The International Media Policy and Advisory Centre (GFMD IMPACT) is hosting two side events at the Global Conference for Media Freedom in Tallinn, Estonia on the afternoon of 9 February 2022.

The Third Global Conference for Media Freedom will be hosted in Tallinn from February 9 to February 10, 2022, by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Estonian Institute of Human Rights. The conference will provide a long-sought forum for in-person meetings and discussions to strengthen joint efforts in defending media freedom and human rights worldwide. The hybrid format will also allow participants to join in virtually, from all over the world. The conference will combine traditional and innovative media freedom topics focusing on Disinformation and Freedom of Speech, Protection of Journalists and interlinkages between Media Freedom and Internet Freedom.

During the first session “A sustainable and viable future for journalism – designing effective interventions” (12.30-14.00 EET) speakers will elaborate on the idea that “without urgent action by governments, civil society, and private companies, trustworthy journalism will remain under threat, and information as a public good severely undernourished”. Main findings from the practice will be introduced by key speakers Patricia Torres-Burd, (MDIF), Jason Lambert (Internews), Milka Domanovic (BIRN) and Caroline Vuillemin (Fondation Hirondelle). Research results will be presented by Guilherme Canela De Souza Godoi (UNESCO), Clare Cook (IMS), Lars Tallert,(Fojo Media Institute, Linnaeus University), Nadine Jurrat, (DW Akademie) and Roula Michael (Maharat Foundation). The second session “Renewing the principles for effective media support” (14.15-15.45 EET) will focus on the need to strengthen and reinforce effective international support to the media sector through a process for updating and codifying guiding principles. Donor and intergovernmental perspectives will be presented by Guy Berger (UNESCO), Helena Bjuremalm (Sida), Ursula Keller (SDC) and Urška Umek (Information Society Department, Council of Europe). Practitioner perspective will be introduced by Jesper Højberg (IMS), Owais Aslam Ali, (PPF, MFC-CN), Kiran Maharaj (Media Institute of the Caribbean) and Leon Willems (FPU).
Mira Milosevic (GFMD), Nick Benequista (CIMA) and Justin Williams (UK FCDO) will conclude the discussion by proposing the next steps. For more details about this meeting see our briefing paper here.
