Peering into the Crystal Ball: Predictions and Trends for Journalism in 2022

For ICFJ’s next webinar, they will be joined by a researcher and a futurist to discuss the trends that are expected to define journalism in 2022 as well as predictions for the year ahead. They will be hosting Nic Newman from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and Sam Guzik from the Future Today Institute.

In a recent report, Newman, a senior research associate at the Reuters Institute, said that 2022 will be a year of careful consolidation for a news industry that has been both disrupted and galvanized by the drawn-out COVID-19 crisis. He is of the opinion that both journalists and audiences are, to some degree, “burnt out” by the relentless intensity of the news agenda, alongside increasingly polarized debates about politics, identity and culture. Going by Newman’s prediction, 2022 could be the year when journalism takes a breath, focuses on the basics, and comes back stronger.

Newman, who played a key role in shaping the BBC’s internet services over more than a decade and led international coverage for the BBC News website as world editor from 1997 to 2001, will provide insights on the key trends that are expected to define the new year.

Sam Guzik, on the other hand, will leverage analysis and research to provide expert insights on the tech trends that will define journalism in 2022. Guzik, who identifies as a journalist, futurist and product thinker, is a foresight affiliate at the Future Today Institute specializing in technology, media, digital products, subscription products and newsroom tools. He is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the NYU Stern School of Business.
