Report explores pandemic media coverage

09.07.09

A paper published in February reports on a study of communication in the media regarding a potential avian influenza epidemic.

Published as part of an ongoing program of research funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, the study, “Developing Pandemic Communication Strategies: Preparation without Panic,” provides recommendations for the development of future social marketing campaigns in the event of pandemics or other public health crises.

Research concludes that pandemic media coverage “can serve to accurately and effectively inform the public or to misinform and contribute to unnecessary public panic and subsequent undesirable responses.”

The paper is available only with a paid subscription.
