Digihub Africa

Mission and Approach

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, Digihub Africa is a leading advocate for digital rights in Africa. Its mission is to defend and promote inclusive, rights-based digital governance while addressing online hate, misinformation, and censorship.

Digihub Africa prioritises equipping young people from underrepresented communities with the skills to navigate digital spaces safely and meaningfully. By bridging the digital divide between urban and rural populations and focusing on gender equity in technology access, the organisation ensures that all communities can fully participate in Africa’s digital transformation.

Prosob Achievements

Over the past year, Digihub Africa has spearheaded two impactful initiatives:

  • “Hold Before You Send It” Campaign: This youth-centred initiative tackles cyberbullying, online harassment, and digital hate speech. Through online engagement, workshops, and interactive discussions, the campaign promotes responsible digital communication, critical thinking, and empathy. The campaign will culminate in the Africa Online Safety Conference, uniting educators, policymakers, activists, and youth to advance actionable solutions.

  • Rapid Response Campaign During the Goma (DRC) Internet Shutdown: When internet access was disrupted, Digihub Africa coordinated with civil society, journalists, and regional coalitions to advocate for connectivity restoration. By raising public awareness and engaging policymakers, the campaign highlighted the human and economic impact of internet shutdowns, amplifying citizen voices and reinforcing Digihub Africa’s role as a credible defender of digital rights in the region.

Impact on Communities and the Media Landscape

The “Hold Before You Send It” campaign engaged thousands of young people across Africa, sparking a dialogue on online safety among educators, activists, and policymakers.

The Goma campaign went beyond immediate advocacy – it inspired action across media and civil society networks, reinforcing a culture of digital rights protection. Digihub Africa’s work has solidified its reputation as a committed voice for internet freedom on the continent.

Challenges and Strategic Approaches

Sustaining long-term funding for grassroots initiatives remains a key challenge, alongside identifying partners aligned with Digihub Africa’s mission. To address this, the organisation is expanding partnerships with international foundations, tech companies, and civil society networks. This approach supports scalable, adaptable programs that can be implemented across Africa.

Reflections on the GFMD Membership

“Digital rights are human rights. Our role is to ensure that no one, especially underserved communities in rural areas, is left behind in Africa’s digital transformation.”
